Inclement Weather

WHO IS WATCHING THE WEATHER?

The superintendent and transportation director carefully watch the weather conditions during seasons of possible inclement weather.

WHO MAKES THE DECISION?

The superintendent of schools is responsible for the final decision, based on the above factors and recommendations from the district staff.

HOW DOES THE ADMINISTRATION DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT TO CLOSE SCHOOL?

When inclement weather is in the forecasts, the director of transportation and the superintendent test the road conditions on bus routes beginning at 3:30-4 a.m. If the decision is a difficult one, local law enforcement is contacted about road conditions. Careful consideration is given to the most dangerous bus routes in the district. So, even if it looks clear on your street, dangerous conditions may exist in other parts of our district.

WHAT FACTORS ARE CONSIDERED?

The safety of all Eufaula school children is our primary concern in making our decision. In deciding whether children will be safe, we look at the following factors

  • Information on road conditions from the superintendent, the director of transportation and from law enforcement

  • The time of day the snow and ice is predicted to affect our area of the state

  • Building conditions (whether schools have power and heat)

  • Parking Lot Conditions

  • Temperature and wind-chill

HOW IS THE PUBLIC NOTIFIED?

Those with phone numbers on file with the school district will be notified with the district's automated phone system. Notifications will also be posted on the district website, as well as all school Facebook pages, and on the following radio and television stations.

As always, If school should remain open during inclement weather, the decision to send students to school remains with the parents.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER IS BAD BUT NOT SEVERE ENOUGH TO CANCEL CLASSES?

In the event that inclement weather is less severe and road and weather conditions allow for the school to safely remain in session, our transportation director may instruct the district's school bus drivers to use snow routes. These routes were drawn to safely provide transportation to and from school, avoiding hilly and historically tough-to-travel roads.
